Orobay Beagles is a small kennel situated in the beautiful Glass House Mountains near Brisbane, Australia. My aim is to produce happy, healthy and genetically sound beagles which will provide an abundance of fun, joy and mischief for their owners for many years to come.
I first started in the dog show world at the age of 16 when my parents bought me an English Springer Spaniel puppy for Christmas from Jim & Helen Cattermole (Springregal). Asked if I was interested in showing, I said no and chose my pet. Helen invited me to a dog show and I decided to give it a go. Although Jasmine was not a show prospect, I caught the bug and the rest is history! I was given tremendous support and advice by Vicky Henderson who taught me so much about assessing a dogs attributes and relating them to the standard of the breed.
After about five years, I met my husband and started a family so that ended my dog showing for the time being as I concentrated on raising my family. Later down the track when my Springers had passed on and we were looking for a dog to love, we decided on a beagle and I wanted to start the right way. I was fortunate to purchase a lovely girl, Castaulan Sweet Hannah, who became my first Champion and the foundation of Orobay Beagles. I will always be grateful to Lee Barke for allowing me to have Hannah and for her help and advice over the years. Hannah together with Lee's beloved Solo (Ch. Castaulan Solomans Gold), produced two champions - Grand. Ch. Orobay Backstreet Boy and Ch. Orobay Golden Nikita.
Jane Millar (Semeru) has been a great friend and wealth of knowledge to me. Without her help and advice I would not be where I am today. Her English import, Buttermere Fatal Talent, is behind a lot of my stock today and her Aust & NZ Ch. Buckvael Solomon Grundy produced my Ch. Orobay Amazing Grace who has some lovely progeny in the ring. Grace put to Ch. Kislev Gambling Man (Jack) produced Ch. Orobay Optical Precision and Ch. Orobay Optical Magic who went Best in Show and Reserved in Show respectively at the 80th Beagle Club of NSW Specialty in 2006 under Mr. Martin Sanders (Wales). Both have since become Grand Champions and have won many specialty Challenges and Best in Shows. They say repeat matings don't work - I beg to differ. Encouraged by Jane to repeat this breeding and promising her the pick male, it definitely did work. Another four champions were produced, RBIS Ch. Orobay Graceful Gambler, Ch. Orobay Graceful Diva, Phil. HOF, Aust., Thai, Malaysian Champion Orobay Graceful Melody and Multi BISS Grand Ch. Orobay Graceful Triumph. Trumpy will leave our shores for a short spell in the UK in early 2012 and will be entered in Crufts 2012. Good luck Trumpy.
I am now enjoying a great deal of success in the showring and my breeding program. I have kept my show activities to a minimum because my family was very young when I started and can usually only manage about three shows a month. Despite this, my beagles manage to perform well at breed, group and show levels.
